Here are 7 tips to include in your spring roof maintenance routine:
Look for Signs of Wear or Damage.
Not only should you be on the lookout for any signs of obvious damage, such as shingles that are missing or a warping roof, but you should also be on the lookout for more minimal signs of wear, like discoloration. Similarly, it might be easy to overlook an area where water is collecting, but this can actually lead to more serious problems if not corrected early. Don’t forget to inspect your fascias and soffits, which can serve as a prime residence for animals.
Repair All Damage.
One common source of trouble for roofs is one that leaks. This is a problem that should be fixed immediately because it can damage your drywall or cause mold. If your roof is mostly in good condition with the exception of one leaky area, a DIY repair will work just fine. You might have to replace some shingles or secure your flashing.
Check the State of Your Flashing.
By this, we are referring to the metal pieces that attach your skylight or chimney to your actual roof. Flashing can begin to loosen or can rust out over time and can cause a variety of problems, including leaky roofs or mold. Ensure that your flashing is tightly secured. If not, you can use roofing cement to secure it or replace the flashing with a new piece. Also, ensure that your caulking is in good condition. If not, replace it.
Sweep Away Any Debris.
Use a broom to clear away any branches, etc.
Get Rid of Any Moss or Mold.
Avoid using a power washer to take care of this task as this can actually cause more damage to your roof. Instead, simply spray your roof with a spray designed to remove moss and use a brush to clear it away.
Clean Out the Gutters.
Your gutters have likely become home to leaves and a variety of other debris. Don’t forget your downspouts. Water is enough to take care of this task.
